| Sommario/riassunto: | This fascinating study suggests that the Anglo-Saxon poem <i>Beowulf</i> was composed in the winter of 826-7 as a requiem for King Beornwulf of Mercia on behalf of Wiglaf, the ealdorman who succeeded him.
