The pattern of ancient river terraces, alluvial fans, landslides, and colluvial aprons in a metasedimentary terrane has resulted in a mosaic of Pliocene to Pleistocene soils developed in residual and transported parent material. Soils common to the alluvial fans, debris flows, and other transported material are more similar to soils developed in unconsolidated Coastal Plain sediments than to those developed in the surrounding weathered Piedmont metasedimentary rocks.
