Nota di contenuto This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications AMORPHOUS POLYMERS AND NON-NEWTONIAN FLUIDS is in part the proceedings of a workshop which was an integral part of the 1984-85 IMA program on CONTINUUM PHYSICS AND PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS We are grateful to the Scientific Committee: Haim Brezis Constantine Dafermos Jerry Ericksen David Kinderlehrer for planning and implementing an exciting and stimulating year-long program. We espe­ cially thank the Program Organizers, Jerry Ericksen, David Kinderlehrer, Stephen Prager and Matthew Tirrell for organizing a workshop which brought together scientists and mathematicians in a variety of areas for a fruitful exchange of ideas. Sell Hans Weinberger Preface Experiences with amorphous polymers have supplied much of the motivation for developing novel kinds of molecular theory, to try to deal with the more significant features of systems involving very large molecules with many degrees offreedom. Similarly, the observations of many unusual macroscopic phenomena has stimulated efforts to develop linear and nonlinear theories of viscoelasticity to describe them. In either event, we are confronted not with a well-established, specific set of equations, but with a variety of equations, conforming to a loose pattern and suggested by general kinds of reasoning. One challenge is to devise techniques for finding equations capable of delivering definite and reliable predictions. Related to this is the issue of discovering ways to better grasp the nature of solutions ofthose equations showing some promise.

Nota di contenuto The purpose of this work is a unified and general treatment of activity in neural networks from a mathematical pOint of view. Possible applications of the theory presented are indica­ ted throughout the text. However, they are not explored in de­ tail for two reasons : first, the universal character of n- ral activity in nearly all animals requires some type of a general approach~ secondly, the mathematical perspicuity would suffer if too many experimental details and empirical peculiarities were interspersed among the mathematical investigation. A guide to many applications is supplied by the references concerning a variety of specific issues. Of course the theory does not aim at covering all individual problems. Moreover there are other approaches to neural network theory (see e.g. Poggio-Torre, 1978) based on the different lev­ els at which the nervous system may be viewed. The theory is a deterministic one reflecting the average be­ havior of neurons or neuron pools. In this respect the essay is written in the spirit of the work of Cowan, Feldman, and Wilson (see sect. 2.2). The networks are described by systems of nonlinear integral equations. Therefore the paper can also be read as a course in nonlinear system theory. The interpretation of the elements as neurons is not a necessary one. However, for vividness the mathematical results are often expressed in neurophysiological terms, such as excitation, inhibition, membrane potentials, and impulse frequencies. The nonlinearities are essential constituents of the theory.

The aim of the book Our "Contributions to a General Asymptotic Statistical Theory" (Springer Lecture Notes in Statistics, Vol. 13, 1982, called "Vol. I" in the following) suggest to describe the local structure of a general family ~ of probability measures by its tangent space, and the local behavior of a functional K: ~ ~~k by its gradient. Starting from these basic concepts, asymptotic envelope power functions for tests and asymptotic bounds for the concentration of estimators are obtained, and heuristic procedures are suggested for the construction of test- and estimator-sequences attaining these bounds. In the present volume, these asymptotic investigations are carried one step further: From approximations by limit distributions to approximations by Edgeworth expansions, 1 2 adding one term (of order n- / ) to the limit distribution. As in Vol. I, the investigation is "general" in the sense of dealing with arbitrary families of probability measures and arbitrary functionals. The investigation is special in the sense that it is restricted to statistical procedures based on independent, identically distributed observations. 2 Moreover, it is special in the sense that its concern are "regular" models (i.e. families of probability measures and functionals which are subject to certain general conditions, like differentiability). Irregular models are certainly of mathematical interest. Since they are hardly of any practical relevance, it appears justifiable to exclude them at this stage of the investigation.
