Each is considered an evolutionarily significant unit (ESU) or, for steelhead, a distinct population segment (DPS). An ESU or DPS is a group of Pacific salmon or steelhead that is discrete from other groups of the same species and that represents an important component of the evolutionary legacy of the species.1 Under the Endangered Species Act, each ESU or DPS is treated as a species.
