Sommario/riassunto: Elena Hitzel pursues the idea that human gaze locations are influenced by currently non-fixated objects that are visible in the peripheral visual field. Using eye tracking equipment and a Virtual Reality system to provide naturalistic tasks, the author shows that gaze is biased towards a neighboring object, especially when this object is relevant to the subject’s current task. This suggests that peripheral vision is used in the allocation of gaze in daily life and that this bias can be interpreted in terms of a compromise between foveal and peripheral information gain. The benefit of this bias in natural vision is discussed in the context of bottom-up and top-down theories.  Contents The Allocation of Gaze in Natural Tasks An Effect of Peripheral Information on Gaze A Visual Center of Gravity Effect in Real-Life Tasks The Tasks-Relevance of Objects and its Impact on Gaze Position Target Groups Researchers and students in the fields of Visual Perception and Visual Neuroscience Practitioners in the fields of Cognitive Ergonomics, Man-Machine Interaction, Neuropsychology  The Author After graduating from Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen with a Master‘s degree in Psychology, Elena Hitzel is currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program (Chair of General Psychology, Prof. Karl Gegenfurtner, JLU Gießen) that focuses on value-based modulations of visuo-motor control across the adult life span.    .
