Sommario/riassunto: At first light on Sunday, 22nd June 1941, the charade maintained by both Hitler's Germany and Stalin's Soviet empire that all was well between them finally ended in brutal and spectacular fashion when Germany and its allies attacked the Soviet Union. Codenamed Barbarossa, the scale and summer successes of the operation's initial phase justified Hitler's boast that it would cause the world to stop and hold its breath.
