• Sommario/riassunto: The graduate college "Interdisciplinary Environmental History. Natural Environment and Social Action in Central Europe", funded by the German Research Foundation, started its work at the Georg-August University in Göttingen on July 1st, 2004. In the interests of research-oriented interdisciplinarity, the graduate college's study program is grouped around one Series of workshops with German and international representatives of environmental history disciplines. The present volume is the result of a workshop which the editors held on June 21 and 22, 2006 in Göttingen under the title: “The challenge of securing resources - for cattle disease and pest control in the 18th and 19th Century. ”Scientists from Denmark, Germany, Canada, Austria, Switzerland and the USA were invited to discuss different aspects of the human-nature relationship in this context Using various historical approaches to open up new perspectives on the history of the perception and control of pests and animal diseases in the early modern period. This conference volume contains selected contributions from the workshop, which particularly analyse the interactions between economy, environment and society in times of crisis.
