Sommario/riassunto: | Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an enormous problem in women's health, affecting millions of women worldwide. Each year in the United States, more than 1 million women experience an episode of acute PID, with the rate of infection highest among teenagers. Sparse data exists regarding the incidence and prevalence of PID on a global basis, but extrapolating from WHO estimates of gonorrhea and chlamydia, which continue to increase, the annual incidence of PID in Latin America, South and Southeast Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa continues to increase, with an estimated 10 million cases of PID occurring annually.PID can affect the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, or other related structures. Untreated, it causes scarring and can lead to infertility, tubal pregnancy, chronic pelvic pain, and other serious consequences.Written and edited by leading authorities in the area, this comprehensive new book reviews the basic sciences of PID and gives clear clinical guidance on the effective management of the disease and its sequelae. |
