Sommario/riassunto: A leading contribution to the relations between history and the social sciences, this work was written at the start of the 20th century as the various social science disciplines attempted to constitute and define themselves as sciences, not without a certain competition. Charles Seignobos discusses the contributions and differences between the social sciences while recalling the specificity of the historical method. Published in 1901, this text provoked foundational debates in the social sciences, notably initiating François Simiand's critique of a history qualified as "historizing" (1903). Reading this work nevertheless leads to rediscovering, as Antoine Prost invites us in his unpublished preface, "the breadth, modernity and importance" of the epistemology of the history of Seignobos, far from all the positivist caricatures, and giving a large place to the subjectivism of interpretation.
