Sommario/riassunto: The first edition of Ballengers book was published in 1908 and has since been translated into 10 languages. The 18th edition continues the tradition of presenting a complex reference text of current knowledge in otorhinolaryngology for the 21st century. The 18th edition comprises 114 chapters organised into six sections, each edited by a leader in its discipline. The sections are topically arranged to address otology/neurotology, rhinology, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, pediatric otorhinolaryngology, laryngology and bronchoesophagology, and head and neck surgery. The presentation of basic science underlying clinical otorhinolaryngology has been expanded and molecular mechanisms and genetics of disease are presented. Disorders of smell, taste, balance and hearing, voice, speech, and lagnuage are also emphasised to provide comprehensive coverage of the discipline. Blending state-of-the-art clinical techniques with coverage of scientific foundations, this book is designed to satisfy the informational needs of developing specialists and seasoned practitioners alike. New chapters include Allergy Evaluation, Immunotherapy, Medical Management of Chronic Sinusitis, Otoplasty, and Cleft Lip. New chapters in an expanded section on pediatric otorhinolaryngology include Congenital Anomalies of the Mandible and Maxilla; Drooling, Dysphagia, and Aspiration; Congenital Anomalies of the Nose and Nasal Airway, Congenital Anomalies of the Larynx and Trachea, Acquired Anomalies of the Larynx and Trachae, Aerodigestive Tract Foreign bodies and Caustic Ingestions; Speech and Resonance Disorders in Children; Voice Disorders in Children; and Vascular Tumors and Malformations of the Head and Neck. Senior authors were chosen not only for their original contributions, but also for their intellectual leadership of the speciality. basic science and clinical chapters stress the role of molecular biology in the pathogenesis of disease. Throughout, the genetic basis of disease has been emphasized. The book is a unique blend of state-of-the-art clinical techniques, methods and outcomes together with coverage of basic mechanisms and science. It provides students, residents, fellows and practitioners withe the understanding necessary to participate fully in the use of molecular biology in therapy.
