• Sommario/riassunto: The republic as the place of the lumières: this myth runs like a thread through the history of the republican consciousness in France in the 19th century. Above all, the opposition photo journalism portrayed the light nature of the republic and its struggle against the "dark" forces of reaction in ever new ways. But even with the consolidation of the Third Republic after 1870, the long-awaited "epoch of light" did not begin immediately, all the less since the republic itself by no means always lived up to its role as a lightbringer. Daniela Kneißl examines for the first time how the metaphors "light" and "darkness" visualized political, cultural and social conflicts between 1871 and 1914, and underlines the complex links between metaphorical expectation of light, technical progress in light and actual need for light.
