Sommario/riassunto: Argues that many major texts of 20th-century literature revolve around the concept of the mother figure. Examining novels of the Harlem Renaissance and Modernism and drawing upon the history of eugenics and anthropology, this study shows how mother figures represent symbols of race and ethnicity.
