Sommario/riassunto: | "Peripheral vascular disease refers to a cluster of conditions in which atherosclerosis (narrowing of the blood vessel wall) occurs in the peripheral vascular system, especially in the legs, causing significant disability and risk of amputation and infection. The worldwide prevalence of peripheral vascular disease, also known as peripheral arterial disease, increased 24% from 2000-2010, with about 70% of sufferers living in low to mid income regions. Approximately 202 million people suffered from peripheral vascular disease in 2010, with about 27 million in Europe and North America; 55 million in South East Asia; and 46 million in the Western Pacific region. Key risk factors include smoking, diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol. Given that peripheral vascular disease is more common in those over 60 years old, the incidence of disease is expected to grow as the population continues to age. Despite these statistics, many interventional cardiology fellowship programs do not include training on peripheral vascular interventions"--Provided by publisher. |
