Sommario/riassunto: Geographies of Disability explores the relationship between space and disability explaining how space, place and related concepts such as mobility shape the experiences of disabled people. The book is organised into three parts. Part one presents a critical appraisal of theories of disability, space and embodiment and develops a disability model. Part two takes an historical perspective and uses case studies to expose how the transition to capitalism affected the everyday lives of disabled people. Part three explores contemporary scenarios of disability: the Western city and the important policy realms of community care and accessibility regulation. Demonstrating and explaining why the production of space has disadvantaged disabled people both in the past and in contemporary societies, Geographies of Disability presents an important contribution to the major policy debates on disability in Western societies and offers new considerations for the broader debates on embodiment and space within Geography.
