Here, archaeologist Robert L. Kelly explains how the study of our cultural past can predict the future of humanity. In an eminently readable style, Kelly identifies four key pivot points in the six-million-year history of human development: the emergence of technology, culture, agriculture, and the state. In each example, the author examines the long-term processes that resulted in a definitive, no-turning-back change for the organization of society. Kelly then looks ahead, giving us evidence for what he calls a fifth beginning, one that started about AD 1500. Some might call it "globalization," but the author places it in its larger context: a five-thousand-year arms race, capitalism's global reach, and the cultural effects of a worldwide communication network. Kelly predicts that the emergent phenomena of this fifth beginning will include the end of war as a viable way to resolve disputes, the end of capitalism as we know it, the widespread shift toward world citizenship, and the rise of forms of cooperation that will end the near-sacred status of nation-states. It's the end of life as we have known it. However, the author is cautiously optimistic: he dwells not on the coming chaos, but on humanity's great potential. 606 $aCivilization 606 $aCulture 606 $aSocial history 610 $aactivist. 610 $aagriculture. 610 $aancient world. 610 $aarchaeologist. 610 $aarchaeology. 610 $aarms race. 610 $acapitalism. 610 $acitizenship. 610 $acommunication. 610 $acultural history. 610 $aculture. 610 $aevidence. 610 $afifth beginning. 610 $aglobal. 610 $aglobalization. 610 $agovernment. 610 $ahistory of culture. 610 $ahistory. 610 $ahuman development. 610 $ahuman history. 610 $ainternational. 610 $alife changing. 610 $along term. 610 $amodern world. 610 $anation states. 610 $apolitics. 610 $apotential. 610 $asociety. 610 $atechnology. 610 $awartime. 615 0$aCivilization. 615 0$aCulture. 615 0$aSocial history. 676 $a909 700 $aKelly$b Robert L.$f1957-$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0981275 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910798729703321 996 $aThe Fifth Beginning$93721620 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01492nam0 22003373i 450 001 UTO1036903 005 20251003044436.0 010 $a8849500556 100 $a20140801d2000 ||||0itac50 ba 101 | $aita 102 $ait 181 1$6z01$ai $bxxxe 182 1$6z01$an 200 1 $aˆL'‰economia agrobiologica in Campania$eun difficile percorso$fa cura di F.
