The Elizabethan colonisers in Ireland included some of the leading poets and translators of the day. In Language and Conquest in Early Modern Ireland, Patricia Palmer uses their writings, as well as material from the State Papers, to explore the part that language played in shaping colonial ideology and English national identity. Palmer shows how manoeuvres of linguistic expansion rehearsed in Ireland shaped Englishmen's encounters with the languages of the New World, and frames that analysis within a comparison between English linguistic colonisation and Spanish practice in the New World. This is an ambitious, comparative study, which will interest literary and political historians. 517 3 $aLanguage & Conquest in Early Modern Ireland 606 $aEnglish literature$yEarly modern, 1500-1700$xHistory and criticism 606 $aEnglish language$xPolitical aspects$zIreland 606 $aBritish$zIreland$xHistory$y16th century 606 $aIrish language$xPolitical aspects$zIreland 606 $aEnglish language$zIreland 606 $aLanguage policy$zIreland 606 $aImperialism in literature 606 $aRenaissance$zEngland 607 $aIreland$xForeign public opinion, English$xHistory$y16th century 607 $aIreland$xHistory$y1558-1603$xHistoriography 607 $aIreland$xHistory$yTo 1603$xHistoriography 607 $aIreland$xIn literature 607 $aIreland$xLanguages 615 0$aEnglish literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aEnglish language$xPolitical aspects 615 0$aBritish$xHistory 615 0$aIrish language$xPolitical aspects 615 0$aEnglish language 615 0$aLanguage policy 615 0$aImperialism in literature. 615 0$aRenaissance 676 $a820.9/9417/09031 700 $aPalmer$b Patricia$f1957-$01463659 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910783051103321 996 $aLanguage and conquest in early modern Ireland$93805234 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02415nam0 22005173i 450 001 SBL0446600 005 20251003044354.0 100 $a19910930d1973 ||||0itac50 ba 101 | $aita$cita 102 $ait 181 1$6z01$ai $bxxxe 182 1$6z01$an 183 1$6z01$anc$2RDAcarrier 200 1 $aˆGli ‰anni '50 in fabbrica$econ un diario di commissione interna$fAris Accornero$gpresentazione di Bruno Manghi 210 $aBari$cDe Donato$d[1973] 215 $a333 p.$d21 cm. 225 | $aMovimento operaio$v10 312 $aTit. sviluppato: ˆGli ‰anni Cinquanta in fabbrica.$9LO10316230 410 0$1001RAV0043321$12001 $aMovimento operaio$v10 500 10$aˆGli ‰anni '50 in fabbrica$3TSA1810806$9CFIV012657$9210609 517 1 $aˆGli ‰anni Cinquanta in fabbrica.$9LO10316230 606 $aMOVIMENTO OPERAIO$xITALIA$x1950-1957$2FIR$3MILC086234$9I 676 $a331.88$9SINDACATI$v12 676 $a331.88$9SINDACATI$v23 676 $a331.880 945$9$v20 676 $a331.88092$9SINDACATI.
