Through penetrating analysis and personal engagement, Vincent Brook uncovers the many portraits of this ever-enticing, ever-ambivalent, and increasingly multicultural megalopolis. Divided into sections that probe Los Angeles's checkered history and reflect on Hollywood's own self-reflections, the book shows how the city, despite considerable remaining challenges, is finally blowing away some of the smoke of its not always proud past and rhetorically adjusting its rear-view mirrors. Part I is a review of the city's history through the early 1900's, focusing on the seminal 1884 novel Ramona and its immediate effect, but also exploring its ongoing impact through interviews with present-day Tongva Indians, attendance at the 88th annual Ramona pageant, and analysis of its feature film adaptations. Brook deals with Hollywood as geographical site, film production center, and frame of mind in Part II. He charts the events leading up to Hollywood's emergence as the world's movie capital and explores subsequent developments of the film industry from its golden age through the so-called New Hollywood, citing such self-reflexive films as Sunset Blvd., Singin' in the Rain, and The Truman Show. Part III considers LA noir, a subset of film noir that emerged alongside the classical noir cycle in the 1940's and 1950's and continues today. The city's status as a privileged noir site is analyzed in relation to its history and through discussions of such key LA noir novels and films as Double Indemnity, Chinatown, and Crash. In Part IV, Brook examines multicultural Los Angeles. Using media texts as signposts, he maps the history and contemporary situation of the city's major ethno-racial and other minority groups, looking at such films as Mi Familia (Latinos), Boyz N the Hood (African Americans), Charlotte Sometimes (Asians), Falling Down (Whites), and The Kids Are All Right (LGBT). 606 $aPopular culture$zCalifornia$zLos Angeles$xHistory 606 $aMotion picture industry$zCalifornia$zLos Angeles$xHistory 606 $aCultural pluralism$zCalifornia$zLos Angeles$xHistory 606 $aMinorities$zCalifornia$zLos Angeles$xHistory 607 $aHollywood (Los Angeles, Calif.)$xHistory 607 $aLos Angeles (Calif.)$xSocial conditions 607 $aLos Angeles (Calif.)$xHistory 607 $aLos Angeles (Calif.)$xIn literature 607 $aLos Angeles (Calif.)$xIn motion pictures 615 0$aPopular culture$xHistory. 615 0$aMotion picture industry$xHistory. 615 0$aCultural pluralism$xHistory. 615 0$aMinorities$xHistory. 676 $a979.4 676 $a979.494 700 $aBrook$b Vincent$f1946-$01152844 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910786361703321 996 $aLand of smoke and mirrors$93786933 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02003nam0 22004093i 450 001 RAV0031624 005 20251003044320.0 100 $a20010511d1987 ||||0itac50 ba 101 | $aita 102 $ait 181 1$6z01$ai $bxxxe 182 1$6z01$an 183 1$6z01$anc$2RDAcarrier 200 1 $aEducazione, comunita, sviluppo$el'impegno educativo di Adriano Olivetti$fSaverio Santamaita 210 $aRoma$cFondazione Adriano Olivetti$d[1987] 215 $a127 p.$d23 cm 225 | $aQuaderni della Fondazione Adriano Olivetti$v14 300 $aPubbl. fuori commercio 314 $aSC/BVE 25/01/97$9CFIV113621 410 0$1001CFI0036731$12001 $aQuaderni della Fondazione Adriano Olivetti$v14$171202$aFondazione Adriano Olivetti$3CFIV089563 606 $aOlivetti, Adriano$2FIR$3CFIC056450$9E 676 $a945.092092$9$v20 686 $a336.7$cSCUOLA ED EDUCAZIONE 1945-1968$2R 686 $aIT/3420.0$cPOLITICA E CULTURA ITALIA 1945-1968$2R 686 $aIT/3427.0$cCULTURA E ISTRUZIONE ITALIA 1945-1968$2R 686 $aIT/3430.0$cECONOMIA E SOCIETA ITALIA 1945-1968$2R 686 $aX0.1/OLIVETTI,ADRIANO$cBIOGRAFIE E SCRITTI SU ADRIANO OLIVETTI$2R 686 $aX09.0$cSCIENZE ECONOMICO-SOCIALI$2R 700 1$aSantamaita$b, Saverio$3CFIV113621$4070$0127560 801 3$aIT$bIT-000000$c20010511 850 $aIT-BN0095 901 $bNAP 01$cPOZZO LIB.$nVi sono collocati fondi di economia, periodici di ingegneria e scienze, periodici di economia e statistica e altri fondi comprendenti documenti di economia pervenuti in dono. 912 $aRAV0031624 950 0$aBiblioteca Centralizzata di Ateneo$c1 v.$d 01POZZO LIB.F. COVID-19 crisis prompted the public authorities to rethink the use of public space in order to develop means of transport that are both efficient and adapted to the health context and their effects on cycling practices in Europe, North, and South America. Its contributors collectively reveal and evidence through policies analysis, mapping, and innovative qualitative analysis bridging video and interviews, how those new infrastructures and policies can be a trigger for change in a context of mobility transition. This book provides an important element on the way local authorities can act in a quicker and more agile way. While some decisions are specific to the context of the beginning of the pandemic, the analysis offers lessons on the way to implement the transition toward a low-carbon mobility, on the importance of processes based on trials and errors, on the political stakes of reallocating road space. 410 0$aThe Urban Book Series,$x2365-7588 606 $aUrban policy 606 $aEnvironmental policy 606 $aHuman ecology$xStudy and teaching 606 $aUrban Policy 606 $aEnvironmental Policy 606 $aEnvironmental Studies 615 0$aUrban policy. 615 0$aEnvironmental policy. 615 0$aHuman ecology$xStudy and teaching. 615 14$aUrban Policy. 615 24$aEnvironmental Policy. 615 24$aEnvironmental Studies. 676 $a307.76 700 $aOrtar$b Nathalie$01285194 701 $aRe?rat$b Patrick$0429407 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910764301203321 996 $aCycling Through the Pandemic$93650998 997 $aUNINA
