It shows how the Jesuits developed a militant form of religious expression targeted at protestants and infidels and how many Jesuit mathematicians assisted Catholic leaders by using the mathematical faculties attached to many colleges and seminaries for nobles to provide classroom and private teaching, publications and even consultancies concerning fortification theory, then considered to form part of the 'mathematical disciplines'. This book reveals that the involvement of many Jesuits in 'de re militari' was widespread, sometimes leading to criticism, internal controversies and crises of conscience. The interest of Jesuits in fortifications was discontinued after the 1773-1814 suppression period. 410 0$aHistory of warfare ;$vv. 73. 606 $aMilitary architecture$xHistory 606 $aArchitecture, Baroque 615 0$aMilitary architecture$xHistory. 615 0$aArchitecture, Baroque. 676 $a725/.1808827153 700 $aDe Lucca$b Dennis$01567655 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910790014803321 996 $aJesuits and fortifications$93839185 997 $aUNINA LEADER 00643nam a2200193 i 4500 001 991004360437107536 005 20250702090655.0 008 250107s1968 xxu er 001 0 eng d 040 $aBibl.
