Closing Thoughts on the Future of Hazardous Waste Engineering 520 $aMany engineers, from the chemical and process industries, waste treatment system management and design to the clean-up of contaminated sites, are engaged in careers that address hazardous wastes. However, no single book is available that explains how to manage the risks of those wastes. At best it is dealt with in diverse sections of books on the general field of environmental engineering, and in various treatments of the subject of risk, statistics and hazard assessment. This is a reference and text that blends together theoretical explanations, techniques and case study examples to complement practical knowledge. These include problems with solutions, case studies of current and landmark hazardous waste problems, a companion website, and reference sections that will make certain that this text stays on the practicing engineer's bookshelf. - Addresses a subject of theoretical and regulatory importance - The only book to take this approach - Includes textbook case studies and examples as well as practical advice 533 $aElectronic reproduction.$bAmsterdam :$cElsevier Science & Technology,$d2007.$nMode of access: World Wide Web.$nSystem requirements: Web browser.$nTitle from title screen (viewed on Aug. 2, 2007).$nAccess may be restricted to users at subscribing institutions 650 0$aHazardous wastes$xRisk assessment 655 7$aElectronic books.$2local 700 1 $aPeirce, J. However, not all strains of V. parahaemolyticus are pathogenic. Clinical isolates of V. parahaemolyticus most often produce either the thermostable direct haemolysin (TDH) or TDH-related haemolysin (TRH) encoded by tdh and trh genes, respectively. A pandemic clone of O3:K6 which was first detected in Kolkata (India), has been responsible for many outbreaks in Asia and the USA. With the emergence of pandemic clone of V. parahaemolyticus, this organism has assumed significance. Although most of the V. parahaemolyticus outbreaks are invariably related to seafood consumption, pathogenic strains are rarely isolated from seafood. Virulent strains producing TDH or TRH and the pandemic clone, which is responsible for most of the outbreaks (that have occurred after 1996) have been rarely isolated from seafood and other environmental samples. This could be due to the occurrence of pathogenic strains in the estuarine environment at a lower level compared to non-pathogenic strains. Another reason can be that the pathogenic stains are more sensitive to dystropic conditions in the aquatic environment and rapidly become non-culturable. Similarity in growth kinetics between virulent and non-virulent strains also made the isolation of virulent strains from the aquatic environment difficult. Several studies were done to determine the factors responsible for an increased virulence and persistance of pandemic clone. However, none of those studies were conclusive. Several researchers have proposed various genetic markers for specific detection of pandemic clone of V. parahaemolyticus. But many of those genetic markers were found to be unreliable. Recently, seven genomic islands (VPaI-1 to VPaI-7) unique to pandemic clone were identified. This Research Topic is dedicated to improve our current understanding of ecology, pathogenesis and detection of pathogenic and pandemic clone of V. parahaemolyticus, and will also strive to identify areas of future development. 606 $aMicrobiology (non-medical)$2bicssc 610 $aGenomic Islands 610 $apandemic clone 610 $atdh 610 $atrh 610 $aVibrio parahaemolyticus 610 $aVirulence 615 7$aMicrobiology (non-medical) 700 $aIddya Karunasagar$4auth$01328839 702 $aIndrani Karunasagar$4auth 702 $aPendru Raghunath$4auth 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910220050303321 996 $aEcology, Virulence and Detection of Pathogenic and Pandemic Vibrio Parahaemolyticus$93039017 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02939oam 22007454a 450 001 9910882999403321 005 20240902205256.0 010 $a0-9834639-3-X 035 $a(CKB)34399711600041 035 $a(OCoLC)856522290 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)musev2_124670 035 $a(EXLCZ)9934399711600041 100 $a20120416d2011 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aHealth Citizenship : $eEssays in Social Medicine and Biomedical Politics / $fDorothy Porter 210 1$aBerkeley :$cUniversity of California, Medical Humanities Consortium,$d2011. 210 4$dİ2011. 215 $a1 online resource (314 pages) 225 0 $aPerspectives in medical humanities 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references. 327 $aPublic health -- Social medicine -- Biomedical identity. 330 $aThe rights and responsibilities of health citizenship are increasingly at the forefront of public policy debates concerning disease prevention and health management.
