The volume presents small states' perceptions of European strategic autonomy, highlighting their expectations and concerns. The chapters focus on the depth and breadth of European strategic autonomy, national security considerations, assessment of the impact on transatlantic relations, the expected outputs and its potential impact on the EU's institutional structure. It also shows how systemic circumstances and the interests of powerful states, either belonging to the EU (France, Germany, and Poland) or having a significant say in European security architecture (the US), establish opportunities and constraints for the small states to shape European strategic autonomy. In particular, the study focuses on the diverging interests of the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania), Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Hungary and the Netherlands. It demonstrates that, in most cases, European strategic autonomy is perceived not as an alternative to NATO but as a supplementary element that could facilitate the development of national military capabilities, indigenous defence industries and resilience to non-military threats. Ultimately, the book suggests that national approaches towards European strategic autonomy mainly stem from pragmatic national security and foreign policy considerations, while largely ignoring grand strategic ideas. This book will be of much interest to students of European politics, security studies, and International Relations"$cProvided by publisher. 410 0$aRoutledge Studies in European Security and Strategy Series 517 1 $aEuropean strategic autonomy and small states' security 606 $aNational security$zEurope 606 $apublic safety$9eng$2EUROVOC 606 $aEurope$9eng$2EUROVOC 606 $ainternational relations$9eng$2EUROVOC 606 $adefence policy$9eng$2EUROVOC 606 $acooperation policy$9eng$2EUROVOC 607 $aEurope$xArmed Forces 607 $aEurope$xMilitary policy 607 $aEurope$xDefenses 615 0$aNational security 615 7$apublic safety. 615 7$aEurope. 615 7$ainternational relations. 615 7$adefence policy. 615 7$acooperation policy. 676 $a355.031091821 702 $aC?esnakas$b Giedrius 702 $aJuozaitis$b Justinas 801 0$bNjHacI 801 1$bNjHacl 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910774707003321 996 $aEuropean Strategic Autonomy and Small States' Security$93554432 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01145nam a22002771i 4500 001 991003204939707536 005 20241002131226.0 008 030925s1977 it a||||||||||||||||ita 035 $ab12394026-39ule_inst 035 $aARCHE-044155$9ExL 040 $aBibl.
