While associated with suspect beliefs, they were also regarded as structures with potential practical uses, and some were considered works of art. This engaging study draws on religious anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, and history to explore the fate of these "socialist churches," showing how attitudes and practices related to them were shaped both by laws on the preservation of monuments and anti-religious measures. Advocates of preservation, while sincere in their desire to save the buildings, were indifferent, if not hostile, to their religious purpose. Believers, on the other hand, regarded preservation laws as irritants, except when they provided leverage for use of the buildings by church communities. The situation was eased by the growing rapprochement of the Orthodox Church and Soviet state organizations after 1943, but not fully resolved until the Soviet Union fell apart. Based on abundant archival documentation, Catriona Kelly's powerful narrative portrays the human tragedies and compromises, but also the remarkable achievements, of those who fought to preserve these important buildings over the course of seven decades of state atheism. Socialist Churches will appeal to specialists, students, and general readers interested in church history, the history of architecture, and Russian art, history, and cultural studies. 606 $aAtheism$zSoviet Union 606 $aChurch buildings$zSoviet Union 606 $aHistoric buildings$xConservation and restoration$zSoviet Union 610 $achurches as works of art, Russian churches, church architecture. 615 0$aAtheism 615 0$aChurch buildings 615 0$aHistoric buildings$xConservation and restoration 676 $a322/.109470904 700 $aKelly$b Catriona$0505856 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910811409503321 996 $aSocialist churches$94037706 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04102nam 2200769Ia 450 001 9910815776503321 005 20250626155408.0 010 $a9786612547713 010 $a9780470613115 010 $a0470613114 010 $a9781119198451 010 $a1119198453 010 $a9781282547711 010 $a1282547712 010 $a9780470613092 010 $a0470613092 035 $a(CKB)2670000000009616 035 $a(EBL)487699 035 $a(OCoLC)607555717 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000356659 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11259885 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000356659 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10349668 035 $a(PQKB)10032409 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL487699 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10366538 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL254771 035 $a(FINmELB)ELB178244 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC487699 035 $a(Perlego)1010642 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000009616 100 $a20091030d2010 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 14$aThe anti-corruption handbook $ehow to protect your business in the global marketplace /$fWilliam P.
