Female excellence, and related feminocentric values, were celebrated by forward-looking critics who argued for music as a fine art, a component of modern, polite, and commercial culture, rather than a symbol of institutional power. In the eyes of such critics, femininity-a newly emerging and primarily bourgeois ideal-linked women and music under the valorized signs of refinement, sensibility, virtue, patriotism, luxury, and, above all, beauty. This moment in musical history was eclipsed in the first decades of the nineteenth century, and ultimately erased from the music-historical record, by now familiar developments: the formation of musical canons, a musical history based on technical progress, the idea of masterworks, authorial autonomy, the musical sublime, and aggressively essentializing ideas about the relationship between sex, gender and art. In Sovereign Feminine, Matthew Head restores this earlier musical history and explores the role that women played in the development of classical music. 606 $aGender identity in music 606 $aWomen musicians$zGermany$xHistory$y18th century 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aGender identity in music. 615 0$aWomen musicians$xHistory 676 $a780.82/0943 700 $aHead$b Matthew$01040517 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910462898703321 996 $aSovereign feminine$92463469 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01008nam a2200277 i 4500 001 991002206899707536 005 20020507161323.0 008 000516s1995 it ||| | ita 020 $a8814051690 035 $ab11624061-39ule_inst 035 $aLE02732271$9ExL 040 $aDip.to Studi Giuridici$bita 082 0 $a342.44066 084 $aAM-IX/B 100 1 $aMasucci, Alfonso$0148088 245 13$aIl processo amministrativo in Francia /$cAlfonso Masucci 260 $aMilano :$bA.
