A complex and robust ideology of law and justice is evident not only in the dynamics of imperial administration, but a host of cultural arenas. Citizenship named the privilege of falling under Roman jurisdiction, legal expertise was cultural capital. A faith in the emperor?s intimate concern for justice was a key component of the voluntary connection binding Romans and provincials to the state. Even as law was a central mechanism for control and the administration of state violence, it also exerted a magnetic effect on the peoples under its control. Adopting a range of approaches, the essays explore the impact of Roman law, both in the tribunal and in the culture. Unique to this anthology is attention to legal professionals and cultural intermediaries operating at the empire?s periphery. The studies here allow one to see how law operated among a range of populations and provincials?from Gauls and Brittons to Egyptians and Jews?exploring the ways local peoples creatively navigated, and constructed, their legal realities between Roman and local mores. They draw our attention to the space between laws and legal ideas, between ethnic, especially Jewish, life and law and the structures of Roman might; cases in which shared concepts result in diverse ends; the pageantry of the legal tribunal, the imperatives and corruptions of power differentials; and the importance of reading the gaps between depiction of law and its actual workings. This volume is unusual in bringing Jewish, and especially rabbinic, sources and perspectives together with Roman, Greek or Christian ones. This is the result of its being part of the research program ?Judaism and Rome? (ERC Grant Agreement no. 614 424), dedicated to the study of the impact of the Roman empire upon ancient Judaism. 606 $aClassics 606 $aHistory 606 $aLaw 606 $adroit romain 606 $adroit juifs 606 $areligion 606 $aRoman law 606 $aJewish law 607 $aRome$xPolitics and government$y30 B.C.-476 A.D$vCongresses 607 $aRome$xHistory$yEmpire, 30 B.C.-476 A.D$vCongresses 607 $aRome (Empire)$2fast 607 $aRome$xHistory$yEmpire, 30 B.C.-476 A.D$vCongresses$2nli 608 $aConference papers and proceedings.$2fast 608 $aHistory.$2fast 610 $aRoman law 610 $aJewish law 610 $areligion 615 4$aClassics 615 4$aHistory 615 4$aLaw 615 4$adroit romain 615 4$adroit juifs 615 4$areligion 615 4$aRoman law 615 4$aJewish law 700 $aAndo$b Clifford$f1969-$0255633 701 $aBerthelot$b Katell$01177112 701 $aBlanco Pe?rez$b Aitor$f1987-$01450540 701 $aBryen$b Ari Z$01135901 701 $aCzajkowski$b Kimberley$f1987-$01450541 701 $aDohrmann$b Natalie B$01092181 701 $aDohrmann$b Natalie B$01324674 701 $aDubouloz$b Julien$0305591 701 $aFournier$b Julien$f1978-$01592274 701 $aFowler$b Kimberley$01324675 701 $aFurstenberg$b Yair$01324676 701 $aHayes$b Christine$01281563 701 $aHezser$b Catherine$f1960-$0922024 701 $aKerneis$b Soazick$01295336 701 $aLapin$b Hayim$01025786 701 $aLévy$b Carlos$0183848 701 $aMalka$b Orit$01324678 701 $aNaiweld$b Ron$01324679 701 $aNemo-Pekelman$b Capucine$f1973-$0328612 701 $aPaz$b Yakir$01324680 701 $aRoux$b Marie$01281564 701 $aTuori$b Kaius$0318661 701 $aWilfand$b Yael$01281565 701 $aBerthelot$b Katell$01177112 701 $aDohrmann$b Natalie B$01092181 701 $aNemo-Pekelman$b Capucine$f1973-$0328612 801 0$bFR-FrMaCLE 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910496032403321 996 $aLegal engagement$93908531 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01900nas 2200589-a 450 001 996204156303316 005 20240116213021.0 011 $a2325-5501 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2097585-5 035 $a(OCoLC)51205568 035 $a(CKB)110985822449786 035 $a(CONSER)--2002227366 035 $a(EXLCZ)99110985822449786 100 $a20021211b19681979 --- a 101 0 $aeng 135 $auran||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 14$aThe family coordinator 210 $aMinneapolis, Minn. $cNational Council on Family Relations$d1968-1979 300 $aTitle from title screen (viewed December 12, 2002). 311 1 $a0014-7214 531 $aFAM RELAT 531 $aFAM COORD 531 $aFAMILY COORDINATOR 606 $aFamily life education$zUnited States$vPeriodicals 606 $aFamilies$zUnited States$vPeriodicals 606 $aMarriage$zUnited States$vPeriodicals 606 $aPoradnictwo rodzinne$2dbn 606 $aCzasopismo psychologiczne$2dbn 606 $aFamilies$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01728849 606 $aFamily life education$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00920371 606 $aMarriage$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01010443 607 $aStany Zjednoczone$2dbn 607 $aUnited States$2fast$1https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtxgQXMWqmjMjjwXRHgrq 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 608 $aPeriodicals.$2lcgft 610 $aFamily & Marriage 615 0$aFamily life education 615 0$aFamilies 615 0$aMarriage 615 7$aPoradnictwo rodzinne. 615 7$aCzasopismo psychologiczne. 615 7$aFamilies. 615 7$aFamily life education. 615 7$aMarriage. 676 $a306.8/5/0973 712 02$aNational Council on Family Relations. 912 $a996204156303316 996 $aFamily coordinator$9977123 997 $aUNISA
