Faced with the conceptual inflation of the notion of 'culture,' which now imposes itself as an indispensable issue in contemporary moral and political debates, these dynamic exchanges seek to rethink culture and critique beyond the schematic models that have often predominated, such as the opposition between "mainstream multiculturalism" and the "clash of civilizations." Prefaced by an introduction relating current cultural debates to the critical theory tradition, this book examines the politics of culture and the spirit of critique from three different vantage points. To begin, Gabriel Rockhill and Alfredo Gomez-Muller provide a stage-setting dialogue, followed by discussions with two major representatives of contemporary critical theory: Seyla Benhabib and Nancy Fraser. Working at the horizons of this tradition, Judith Butler, Immanuel Wallerstein, and Cornel West then provide important critical perspectives on cultural politics. The book's concluding section engages with Michael Sandel and Will Kymlicka, who work out of the Rawlsian tradition yet are uniquely concerned with the issue of culture, broadly understood. The epilogue, an interview with Axel Honneth, returns to the core issue of critical theory in cultural politics. Ranging from recent developments and progressive interventions in critical theory to dialogues that incorporate its insights into larger discussions of social and political philosophy, this book sharpens old critical tools while developing new strategies for rethinking the role of 'culture' in contemporary society. 410 0$aNew Directions in Critical Theory 606 $aScience -- Methodology 606 $aSocial sciences -- Methodology 606 $aSocial sciences - Philosophy 606 $aSocial sciences -- Philosophy 608 $aElectronic books. 615 4$aScience -- Methodology. 615 4$aSocial sciences -- Methodology. 615 4$aSocial sciences - Philosophy. 615 4$aSocial sciences -- Philosophy. 676 $a306.201 702 $aGomez-Muller$b Alfredo, 702 $aRockhill$b Gabriel, 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910462655403321 996 $aPolitics of Culture and the Spirit of Critique$92441571 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03352nam 2200613 450 001 9910464636603321 005 20210514234751.0 010 $a3-11-038297-0 010 $a3-11-031064-3 024 7 $a10.1515/9783110310641 035 $a(CKB)3360000000514992 035 $a(EBL)1394780 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001550253 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)16161734 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001550253 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)14807072 035 $a(PQKB)10504659 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1394780 035 $a(DE-B1597)207649 035 $a(OCoLC)908517442 035 $a(DE-B1597)9783110310641 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1394780 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr11049695 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL808424 035 $a(EXLCZ)993360000000514992 100 $a20150511h20152015 uy| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||#|||||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aProvidence perceived $edivine action from a human point of view /$fMark W. It will not ask questions about whether and how God knows the future, or how suffering can be accounted for (as is the case in the treatments by William Lane Craig, Richard Swinburne, or J. Sanders), but will focus on prayer and decision-making as a faithful and/or desperate response to the perception of God as having some controlling influence. The following gives an idea of the ground to be covered: The patristic foundations of the Christian view of Providence; The medieval synthesis of ?objective? and ?subjective? views; Reformational and Early Modern: the shift towards piety; Modern Enlightenment: Providence and Ethics; Barth and the Sceptics; The sense of Providence in the Modern Novel and World. 410 0$aArbeiten zur Kirchengeschichte ;$v124. 606 $aProvidence and government of God 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aProvidence and government of God. 676 $a231.5 700 $aElliott$b M.
