The overlapping influences of the contrasting networks of power at work in the region are explored through the history of one of many small and distinctive political units that flourished in this fragmented environment, the lordships of the Gattilusio family, centred on Lesbos. Though Genoese in origin, they owed their position to Byzantine authority. Though active in crusading, they cultivated congenial relations with the Ottomans. Though Catholic, they afforded exceptional freedom to the Orthodox Church. Their regime is shown to represent both a unique fusion of influences and a revealing microcosm of its times. 410 0$aMedieval Mediterranean ;$vv. 100. 606 $aPirates$zAegean Sea Region$vBiography 606 $aArchons$vBiography 606 $aPower (Social sciences)$zAegean Sea Region$xHistory$yTo 1500 607 $aAegean Sea Region$xHistory 607 $aAegean Sea Region$xPolitics and government 607 $aLesbos Island (Greece)$vBiography 607 $aGenoa (Italy)$vBiography 607 $aByzantine Empire$xRelations$zAegean Sea Region 607 $aAegean Sea Region$xRelations$zByzantine Empire 615 0$aPirates 615 0$aArchons 615 0$aPower (Social sciences)$xHistory 676 $a949.5/82040922 700 $aWright$b Christopher$cPh.D.$0172345 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910791323503321 996 $aThe Gattilusio lordships and the Aegean world, 1355-1462$93763473 997 $aUNINA
