The South China Sea territorial disputes are quickly becoming the most significant security problem in East and Southeast Asia. Two major powers, China and Japan, have interests in the region and are pursuing different strategies that can significantly impact the outcome of the disputes. Utilizing Securitization Theory, this study evaluates the Sino-Japanese strategic competition through political narratives that galvanize the military and economic policies that are transforming the region. It highlights how these narratives, so closely bounded to the political legitimacy of current governments and supported by provocative policies, have resulted in a co-constitutive pattern of enmity and securitization, thus making it increasingly difficult to resolve the disputes. Zenel Garcia is Visiting Assistant Professor at St. Lawrence University, USA. His research focuses on Foreign Policy and Security Studies with a concentration in East Asia. 606 $aAsia$xPolitics and government 606 $aPolitics and war 606 $aSecurity, International 606 $aInternational relations 606 $aAsian Politics 606 $aMilitary and Defence Studies 606 $aInternational Security Studies 606 $aInternational Relations Theory 615 0$aAsia$xPolitics and government. 615 0$aPolitics and war. 615 0$aSecurity, International. 615 0$aInternational relations. 615 14$aAsian Politics. 615 24$aMilitary and Defence Studies. 615 24$aInternational Security Studies. 615 24$aInternational Relations Theory. 676 $a327.51052 676 $a327.51052 700 $aGarcia$b Zenel$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01061127 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910338052003321 996 $aChina?s Military Modernization, Japan?s Normalization and the South China Sea Territorial Disputes$92517571 997 $aUNINA
