The mission was a site of work for Europeans, Fijians and Indo-Fijians, but each community operated separately, as the mission was divided along ethnic lines in 1901. This book outlines the colonial concepts of race and culture, as well as antagonism over land and labour, that were used to justify this separation. Recounting the stories told by the mission's leadership, including missionaries and ministers, to its grassroots membership, this book draws on archival and ethnographic research to reveal the emergence of ethno-nationalisms in Fiji, the legacies of which are still being managed in the post-colonial state today. 606 $aMethodist Church$xMissions 606 $aChristianity and culture$zFiji 607 $aFiji$xPolitics and government$y19th century 610 $aempire studies 610 $amethodist missions 610 $apacific nationalism 610 $afiji 610 $aColonialism 610 $aEthnic groups in Europe 610 $aFijians 610 $aIndian people 610 $aIndo-Fijians 610 $aLondon Missionary Society 615 0$aMethodist Church$xMissions. 615 0$aChristianity and culture 676 $a266.7 700 $aClose-Barry$b Kirstie$0954280 712 02$aAustralian National University, 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910136255703321 996 $aA mission divided$92158304 997 $aUNINA
