Monroe's analysis points not to traditional explanations--such as religion or reason--but to identity. The rescuers' perceptions of themselves in relation to others made their extraordinary acts spontaneous and left the rescuers no choice but to act. To turn away Jews was, for them, literally unimaginable. In the words of one German Czech rescuer, "The hand of compassion was faster than the calculus of reason." At the heart of this unusual book are interviews with the rescuers, complex human beings from all parts of the Third Reich and all walks of life: Margot, a wealthy German who saved Jews while in exile in Holland; Otto, a German living in Prague who saved more than 100 Jews and provides surprising information about the plot to kill Hitler; John, a Dutchman on the Gestapo's "Most Wanted List"; Irene, a Polish student who hid eighteen Jews in the home of the German major for whom she was keeping house; and Knud, a Danish wartime policeman who took part in the extraordinary rescue of 85 percent of his country's Jews. We listen as the rescuers themselves tell the stories of their lives and their efforts to save Jews. Monroe's analysis of these stories draws on philosophy, ethics, and political psychology to suggest why and how identity constrains our choices, both cognitively and ethically. Her work offers a powerful counterpoint to conventional arguments about rational choice and a valuable addition to the literature on ethics and moral psychology. It is a dramatic illumination of the power of identity to shape our most basic political acts, including our treatment of others. But always Monroe returns us to the rescuers, to their strong voices, reminding us that the Holocaust need not have happened and revealing the minds of the ethically exemplary as they negotiated the moral quicksand that was the Holocaust. 606 $aRighteous Gentiles in the Holocaust 606 $aHolocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)$xMoral and ethical aspects 606 $aAltruism$xSocial aspects 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aRighteous Gentiles in the Holocaust. 615 0$aHolocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)$xMoral and ethical aspects. 615 0$aAltruism$xSocial aspects. 676 $a172/.1 700 $aMonroe$b Kristen R.$f1946-$01039225 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910453594103321 996 $aThe hand of compassion$92461295 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03915nam 2200685 450 001 996206003803316 005 20220420111955.0 010 $a1-350-21800-6 010 $a1-84813-679-X 010 $a1-78032-795-1 010 $a1-84813-137-2 010 $a1-281-21598-8 010 $a9786611215989 024 7 $a10.5040/9781350218000 035 $a(CKB)1000000000409910 035 $a(EBL)332932 035 $a(OCoLC)476136882 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000160155 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11155637 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000160155 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10181954 035 $a(PQKB)10578924 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC332932 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4708588 035 $a(OCoLC)1312145145 035 $a(CaBNVSL)9781350218000 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000409910 100 $a20220420d2022 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 02$aA future for the excluded $ejob creation and income generation by the poor: Clodomir Santos de Morais and the organization workshop /$fCarmen, Raff Sobrado, Miguel 205 $aFirst edition. 210 1$aLondon [England] :$cZed Books,$d2022. 210 2$a[London, England] :$cBloomsbury Publishing,$d2022 215 $a1 online resource (257 p.) 300 $aIncludes index. 311 $a1-85649-703-8 311 $a1-85649-702-X 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aThose who don't eat and those who don't sleep -- Clodomir Santos de Morais : the origins of the large-scale capacitation theory and method -- The large group capacitation method and social participation : theoretical considerations -- From Paulo Freire to Clodomir Santos de Morais : from critical to organizational consciousness -- From Navvies to entrepreneurs : the OW in Costa Rica -- Sacked agricultural workers take on the multinationals in Honduras -- The Mexican experience -- The OW in Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Peru -- Three decades of work with OWs in Latin America -- 'Doing enterprises' in wartime and post-war Mozambique -- In Angola, Guinea Bissau and Sa?o Tome? e Principe -- Hard learning in Zimbabwe (SADET) and in post-civil war Mozambique -- Organization development (OD) and the Moraisean OW in South Africa and Botswana -- The potential of the OW in the former Soviet Bloc countries and in economies in crisis -- Post-Salazar Portugal : the first European SIPGEI -- The crisis of work and the welfare reform plans in western countries -- The Brazilian PROGEI-SIPGEIs of the 1980s and 1990s -- The PAE and the self-employment project in Brazil -- The OW and civil society in Brazil -- The OWs potential : concluding observations. 330 $aClodomir Santos de Morais is to organizational and entrepreneurial literacy what his Brazilian confrere, Paulo Freire, is to ordinary literacy. This book introduces for the first time in English the experiences of grassroots development workers who have applied his ideas of the Organization Workshop and capacitation in highly diverse social settings. One of the most exciting aspects of de Morais's methods of working with the most marginalized sectors of society is their relevance not just to Third World countries, but also to Eastern Europe's economies in transition and the most deprived areas. 606 $aJob creation$zDeveloping countries 606 $aPoor$xEmployment$zDeveloping countries 606 $aDevelopment studies$2bicssc 615 0$aJob creation 615 0$aPoor$xEmployment 615 7$aDevelopment studies 676 $a331.11091724 702 $aChaves$b Miguel Sobrado 702 $aCarmen$b Raff 801 0$bCaBNVSL 801 1$bCaBNVSL 801 2$bCaBNVSL 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996206003803316 996 $aA future for the excluded$92038020 997 $aUNISA LEADER 00856nam a2200241 i 4500 001 991000821759707536 008 050210 2002 it 01 0 ita 020 $a8886799705 035 $ab13278149-39ule_inst 040 $aDip.to Studi Storici$bita 082 04$a945.9073 100 1 $aAnatra, Bruno$0211104 245 10$aBanditi e ribelli nella Sardegna di fine Seicento /$cBruno Anatra 260 $aCagliari :$bAM&D,$c2002 300 $a154 p. ;$c21 cm 440 0$aAgorą ;$v19 650 4$aBanditismo$zSardegna$y1600-1700 907 $a.b13278149$b02-04-14$c10-02-05 912 $a991000821759707536 945 $aLE023 945 ANA 1 1$g1$lle023$o-$pE20.00$q-$rl$s- $t0$u1$v0$w1$x0$y.i14075520$z23-05-05 996 $aBanditi e ribelli nella Sardegna di fine Seicento$91107978 997 $aUNISALENTO 998 $ale023$b10-02-05$cm$da $e-$fita$git $h0$i0
