Deftly uncovering the roots of this question in Rhineland mysticism, Pietist introspection, and the rise of the bildungsroman, Jennifer A. Herdt reveals bildung, or ethical formation, as the key to post-Kantian thought. This was no simple process of secularization, in which human beings took responsibility for something they had earlier left in the hands of God. Rather, theorists of bildung, from Herder through Goethe to Hegel, championed human agency in self-determination while working out the social and political implications of our creation in the image of God. While bildung was invoked to justify racism and colonialism by stigmatizing those deemed resistant to self-cultivation, it also nourished ideals of dialogical encounter and mutual recognition. Herdt reveals how the project of forming humanity lives on in our ongoing efforts to grapple with this complicated legacy. 410 0$aChicago scholarship online. 606 $aPhilosophy, German$y18th century 606 $aPhilosophy, German$y19th century 606 $aHumanism$zGermany$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aHumanism$zGermany$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aMoral development$zGermany 606 $aBildungsromans$xHistory and criticism 606 $aPhilosophy and religion$zGermany$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aPhilosophy and religion$zGermany$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aReligion and culture 615 0$aPhilosophy, German 615 0$aPhilosophy, German 615 0$aHumanism$xHistory 615 0$aHumanism$xHistory 615 0$aMoral development 615 0$aBildungsromans$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aPhilosophy and religion$xHistory 615 0$aPhilosophy and religion$xHistory 615 0$aReligion and culture. 676 $a170.943 700 $aHerdt$b Jennifer A., $4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01867720 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9911046605203321 996 $aForming Humanity$94475417 997 $aUNINA LEADER 00760nam 2200277 450 001 996659063403316 005 20250805151031.0 010 $a979-12-5514-189-1 100 $a20250605d2024----km y0itay5003 ba 101 0 $aita 102 $aIT 105 $aa 00 y 200 1 $aHirpini$ele genti del lupo$fa cura di Romualdo Marandino 210 $aGrottaminarda$cDelta 3$d2024 215 $d29 cm$a350 p.$cill. 300 $aper fondo di Avellino 606 0 $2BNCF$aIrpinia$xArcheologia 676 $a937.731 700 1$aMARANDINO,$bRomualdo$0550730 801 0$aIT$bcba$gREICAT 912 $a996659063403316 951 $aXV.1.B. 170$b293170 L.M.$cXV.1.B.$d570193 959 $aBK 969 $aLOCA 996 $aHirpini$94411655 997 $aUNISA
