November 1923 zunächst zum Verlassen der politischen Bühne gezwungen hatte, im Februar 1925 zum zweiten Mal gegründet worden war, stieg Gregor Straßer in wenigen Jahren zu der neben Hitler wichtigsten Gestalt der NS-Bewegung auf. Als die Krise der Weimarer Republik im Sommer 1932 ihren Höhepunkt erreichte, zählte Straßer, mittlerweile Herr des Organisationsapparats der NSDAP und entscheidender Ideenlieferant für das Wirtschaftsprogramm seiner Partei, zugleich zu den Schlüsselfiguren der deutschen Innenpolitik. Noch rascher als sein Aufstieg war freilich sein Sturz. Im Dezember 1932 aufgrund tiefer Differenzen mit Hitler aus der Führung der NSDAP ausgeschieden, wurde er, obwohl er sich nach dem 30. Januar 1933 jeder politischen Tätigkeit enthalten hatte, am 30. Juni 1934 auf Befehl Hitlers ermordet. Udo Kissenkoetter ist es erstmals gelungen, sowohl die Ursachen dieser erstaunlichen Karriere wie die Gründe für ihr jähes Ende exakt zu analysieren und Gregor Straßers politisches Spiel im letzten Jahr der ersten deutschen Republik, das ihn in den Konflikt mit Hitler trieb, fesselnd zu erzählen. Straßers Anteil an der Entwicklung der NSDAP von einer Gruppe politischer Sektierer zur Massenbewegung wird deutlich, die wahre Natur seines Streits mit Hitler, ebenso Herkunft, Wirkung und Bedeutung seiner Gedanken zur Abschaffung und zur Ankurbelung der Wirtschaft, die das Programm der NSDAP vor der Machtergreifung bestimmten und noch die praktische Wirtschaftspolitik in der Anfangsphase des NS-Regimes beeinflussten.
