Dated to 1120, the Catalogue is divided into ten categories of subject matter. Under Daoist and Buddhist Subjects, Figural Subjects, Architecture, Barbarian Tribes, Dragons and Fish, Landscape, Domestic and Wild Animals, Flowers and Birds, Ink Bamboo, and Vegetables and Fruit are biographies of 231 painters, ranging from famous early masters, such as Wu Daozi (ca. 685-758) and Li Cheng (919-967), to otherwise unknown artists of the Song-dynasty court, including fourteen eunuch officials and sixteen male and female members of the royal family. Titles of their pictures held in the palace collection are listed for each artist. These 6,396 paintings testify to the visual culture experienced by viewers of the twelfth century. The author's Introduction analyzes the Catalogue as a source of evidence about the formation of the Song-dynasty palace collection and argues that the majority of its pictures were already in the collection before Huizong's reign, as a result of conquest, confiscation, tribute, gift culture, collecting by earlier emperors, and the production of academy artists and regular officials at the Song court. Under Huizong's reign, around a thousand other pictures were added to the Catalogue through acquisition and reattribution."--$cProvided by publisher 606 $aPainting, Chinese$xSong-Yuan dynasties$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01907130 606 $aArt$xPrivate collections$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00815314 606 $aPainters$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01050530 606 $aPainting, Chinese$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01050737 606 $aPeintres$zChine$xHistoire$y960-1368 (Dynasties des Song et des Yuan)$xBiographies$vSources 606 $aPeinture chinoise$y960-1368 (Dynasties des Song et des Yuan)$vSources 606 $aPeintres$zChine$vBiographies$vOuvrages avant 1800 606 $aPainters$zChina$xHistory$ySong-Yuan dynasties, 960-1368$xBiography$vSources 606 $aPainting, Chinese$ySong-Yuan dynasties, 960-1368$vSources 606 $aPainters$zChina$vBiography$vEarly works to 1800 606 $aPainting, Chinese$xCatalogs$vEarly works to 1800 607 $aChina$2fast 608 $aBiographies. 608 $aSources. 608 $aHistory. 608 $aCatalogs. 608 $aEarly works. 608 $aBiographies. 608 $aBiography 610 $aHistory of art 615 0$aPainting, Chinese$xSong-Yuan dynasties. 615 0$aArt$xPrivate collections. 615 0$aPainters. 615 0$aPainting, Chinese. 615 6$aPeintres$xHistoire$xBiographies 615 6$aPeinture chinoise 615 6$aPeintres 615 0$aPainters$xHistory$xBiography 615 0$aPainting, Chinese 615 0$aPainters 615 0$aPainting, Chinese$xCatalogs 676 $a759.951 702 $aMcNair$b Amy 712 02$aNational Endowment for the Humanities Open Book Program$4fnd$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/fnd 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996517763803316 996 $aXuanhe Catalogue of Paintings$92833514 997 $aUNISA
