Il n?y a donc pas lieu de s?étonner si, à l?invitation du Centre de Recherches sur les Modernités Littéraires de l?Université Michel de Montaigne (Bordeaux 3) et de l?IUFM d?Aquitaine, des écrivains, des biographes, des théoriciens du littéraire et des spécialistes de l?enseignement du français ont accepté de prendre au sérieux cette question controversée de « l?auteur », en la considérant comme une variable majeure de la réalité du texte et de la relation que l?on entretient avec lui. De fait, ce volume présente un éventail d?approches et de perspectives nouvelles, à la lumière de recherches en cours. Il se propose ainsi d?offrir au lecteur ordinaire comme au chercheur, matière à frayer les voies d?une critique inventive. Les quatre volets qui organisent cet ouvrage - « Ouvertures », « Les Discours de légitimation », « Lieux et territoires », « Les enjeux d?une relation », loin, d?ailleurs, de prétendre clore la discussion, en suggèrent au contraire la dynamique. Pourvus d?un « visage », d?un « corps » et d?une « vie » irréductibles à ceux de l?état civil, les auteurs sont d?abord l?incarnation de leurs ?uvres telles qu?elles sont reçues et perçues par une époque, une génération, mais aussi par une mémoire et des institutions. Il fallait donc tenter de démêler la trame de cette fable en cessant d?opposer « biographie » et « mythographie », histoire et légende, portrait et icône, pour tenter de reconnaître ce qui, à travers
