Drawing on cases from revolutionary France to the Russia of Vladimir Putin, the international authors probe the nature and agency of local blasphemy accusations, the historical and legal framework in which they were expressed and the violence, both physical and symbolic, accompanying them. In doing so, the volume reveals how cultures of blasphemy, and related acts of heresy, apostasy and sacrilege, were a companion to or acted as a trigger for physical action but also a form of how violence was experienced. More generally, it shows the importance of religious sensibilities in modern society and the violent potential contained in criticism or ridicule of the sacred and secular alike. 410 0$aNew Perspectives on the History of Liberalism and Freethought 606 $aHISTORY / Social History$2bisacsh 607 $aEurope$2fast 608 $aHistory.$2fast 610 $aBlasphemy. 610 $aheresy. 610 $asacrilege. 610 $aviolence. 615 7$aHISTORY / Social History. 676 $a303.6 702 $aBouwers$b Eveline G., $4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aBouwers$b Eveline, $4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 702 $aCabantous$b Alain, $4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aCueva$b Julio De La, $4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aKerry$b Matthew, $4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aLeber$b Christoffer, $4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aNash$b David, $4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aNash$b David, $4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 702 $aOmes$b Marco Emanuele, $4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aSing$b Manfred, $4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aSk?adanowski$b Marcin, $4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aThompson$b Laura, $4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 712 02$aLiberas$4fnd$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/fnd 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996492069703316 996 $aDemystifying the Sacred$92950978 997 $aUNISA
