It examines British and French popular journalism, utopian fiction and travel accounts about South Sea encounter, pamphlet literature, and pornography, as well as more traditional literary sources on the eighteenth century, such as the novel and philosophical essays and tales. The title refers to a premise in utopian and exoticist fiction about the southern portion of the globe: sexual order defines the character of the state. The book begins by examining how the idea of sexual order operated as the principle for explaining national differences in eighteenth-century contestation between Britain and France. It then traces how, following British and French encounters with Tahiti, the comparison of different national sexual orders formed the basis for two theories of race: race as essential character and race as degeneration. 606 $aEnglish literature$y18th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aErotic literature, English$xHistory and criticism 606 $aSex in literature 606 $aFrench literature$y18th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aTravelers' writings, English$xHistory and criticism 606 $aTravelers' writings, French$xHistory and criticism 606 $aErotic literature, French$xHistory and criticism 606 $aComparative literature$xEnglish and French 606 $aComparative literature$xFrench and English 606 $aGlobalization$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aImperialism in literature 606 $aSex customs in literature 606 $aColonies in literature 606 $aEnlightenment 607 $aOceania$xIn literature 615 0$aEnglish literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aErotic literature, English$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aSex in literature. 615 0$aFrench literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aTravelers' writings, English$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aTravelers' writings, French$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aErotic literature, French$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aComparative literature$xEnglish and French. 615 0$aComparative literature$xFrench and English. 615 0$aGlobalization$xHistory 615 0$aImperialism in literature. 615 0$aSex customs in literature. 615 0$aColonies in literature. 615 0$aEnlightenment. 676 $a820.9/3538 700 $aCheek$b Pamela$01517232 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910782923903321 996 $aSexual antipodes$93754159 997 $aUNINA
