This book, the first study on antisemitism in nineteenth-century Sweden, provides new insights into the debate from the specific case of a country in which religious homogeneity was the considered ideal long into the modern era.Between 1800 and 1900, approximately 150 books and pamphlets were printed in Sweden on the subject of Judaism and Jews. About one third comprised of translations mostly from German, but to a lesser extent also from French and English. Two thirds were Swedish originals, covering all genres and topics, but with a majority on religious topics: conversion, supersessionism, and accusations of deicide and bloodlust. The latter stem from the vastly popular medieval legends of Ahasverus, Pilate, and Judas which were printed in only slightly adapted forms and accompanied by medieval texts connecting these apocryphal figures to contemporary Jews, ascribing them a physical, essential, and biological coherence and continuity - a specific Jewish temporality shaped in medieval passion piety, which remained functional and intelligible in the modern period.Relying on medieval models and their combination of religious and racist imagery, nineteenth-century debates were informed by a comprehensive and mostly negative "knowledge" about Jews. 410 0$aReligious Minorities in the North 606 $aHISTORY / Europe / Scandinavia$2bisacsh 610 $aMiddle Ages. 610 $aSweden. 610 $aanti-judaism. 610 $aarchive. 610 $aemancipation. 615 7$aHISTORY / Europe / Scandinavia. 700 $aHeß$b Cordelia, $4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01223479 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996453544803316 996 $aThe Medieval Archive of Antisemitism in Nineteenth-Century Sweden$92838648 997 $aUNISA LEADER 03018nam 2200649 a 450 001 9911019104903321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a9786613679093 010 $a9781280768323 010 $a1280768320 010 $a9780470718797 010 $a047071879X 010 $a9780470716168 010 $a0470716169 035 $a(CKB)1000000000687610 035 $a(EBL)703726 035 $a(OCoLC)775867068 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000715080 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11472272 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000715080 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10700042 035 $a(PQKB)10380129 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC703726 035 $a(Perlego)2761716 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000687610 100 $a20120309d1952 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aAnterior pituitary secretion and hormonal influences in water metabolism /$fgeneral editor for the Ciba Foundation, G.E.W.
