Por una parte, pretende presentar una descripción de los mecanismos del español contemporáneo y, por otra parte, proponer un método de análisis de la lengua destinado al procesamiento automático del lenguaje natural (PLN), considerado desde una perspectiva lingüística. Está destinado tanto a los estudiantes de lingüística como a los estudiantes de informática que deseen especializarse en PLN, así como a los profesionales de este ámbito. La lectura de este libro no requiere conocimientos previos sobre el funcionamiento de la lengua. Se presentan los mecanismos lingüísticos de manera metódica y progresiva evitando toda terminología que resulte inútilmente oscura y conservando, en la medida de lo posible, el metalenguaje más extendido. Se utilizan los neologismos inevitables, aportando explicaciones tanto teóricas como prácticas. En el plano teórico, el manual es homogéneo y trata de ofrecer en todo momento descripciones explícitas y reproductibles.
