Health disparities have remained stubbornly entrenched in the American health care system--and in Just Medicine, Dayna Bowen Matthew finds that they principally arise from unconscious racial and ethnic biases held by physicians, institutional providers, and their patients. Implicit bias is the single most important determinant of health and health care disparities. Because we have missed this fact, the money we spend on training providers to become culturally competent, expanding wellness education programs and community health centers, and even expanding access to health insurance will have only a modest effect on reducing health disparities. We will continue to utterly fail in the effort to eradicate health disparities unless we enact strong, evidence-based legal remedies that accurately address implicit and unintentional forms of discrimination, to replace the weak, tepid, and largely irrelevant legal remedies currently available. Our continued failure to fashion an effective response that purges the effects of implicit bias from American health care, Matthew argues, is unjust and morally untenable. In this book, she unites medical, neuroscience, psychology, and sociology research on implicit bias and health disparities with her own expertise in civil rights and constitutional law. Just Medicine offers us a new, effective, and innovative plan to regulate implicit biases and eliminate the inequalities they cause, and to save the lives they endanger."--$cPublisher's description. 606 $aRacism 606 $aHealth Status Disparities 606 $aHealthcare Disparities 606 $aMinorities$xMedical care$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01023194 606 $aMedical policy$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01014505 606 $aHealth and race$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00952806 606 $aDiscrimination in medical care$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00895105 606 $aDiscrimination in medical care$zUnited States 606 $aHealth and race$zUnited States 606 $aMedical policy$zUnited States 606 $aMinorities$xMedical care$zUnited States 607 $aUnited States 607 $aUnited States$2fast 608 $aElectronic books. 610 $aHealth disparities. 610 $ablack health. 610 $aequal treatment. 610 $ahealth care for the poor. 610 $ahealth care system. 610 $ahealth education. 610 $aimplicit bias. 610 $amedical care. 610 $amedical education. 610 $amedical racism. 610 $amedical treatment. 610 $aminority health. 610 $apoverty and health care. 610 $aracial injustice. 610 $asystemic injustice. 610 $asystemic racism. 610 $aurban health. 610 $aurban medicine. 615 0$aRacism. 615 0$aHealth Status Disparities. 615 0$aHealthcare Disparities. 615 0$aMinorities$xMedical care. 615 0$aMedical policy. 615 0$aHealth and race. 615 0$aDiscrimination in medical care. 615 0$aDiscrimination in medical care 615 0$aHealth and race 615 0$aMedical policy 615 0$aMinorities$xMedical care 676 $a362.1089 700 $aMatthew$b Dayna Bowen$01055146 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910480518803321 996 $aJust Medicine$92488321 997 $aUNINA
