Despite intensive study of late Antiquity over the last fifty years, even generous definitions of this period have reached only the eighth century, whereas Islam did not mature sufficiently to compare with Christianity or rabbinic Judaism until the tenth century. Before and After Muhammad suggests a new way of thinking about the historical relationship between the scriptural monotheisms, integrating Islam into European and West Asian history. Garth Fowden identifies the whole of the First Millennium--from Augustus and Christ to the formation of a recognizably Islamic worldview by the time of the philosopher Avicenna--as the proper chronological unit of analysis for understanding the emergence and maturation of the three monotheistic faiths across Eurasia. Fowden proposes not just a chronological expansion of late Antiquity but also an eastward shift in the geographical frame to embrace Iran. In Before and After Muhammad, Fowden looks at Judaism, Christianity, and Islam alongside other important developments in Greek philosophy and Roman law, to reveal how the First Millennium was bound together by diverse exegetical traditions that nurtured communities and often stimulated each other. 606 $aIslam 606 $aReligions 608 $aElectronic books. 610 $aAbbasids. 610 $aAchaemenids. 610 $aAlois Riegl. 610 $aAmerica. 610 $aAristotelianism. 610 $aAristotle. 610 $aAsia. 610 $aBaghdad. 610 $aBasra. 610 $aBrethren of Purity. 610 $aChristian Bible. 610 $aChristian Rome. 610 $aChristianity. 610 $aEast Rome. 610 $aEdward Gibbon. 610 $aEurasia. 610 $aEurasian Hinge. 610 $aEurope. 610 $aFirst Millennium. 610 $aGreece. 610 $aGreek philosophy. 610 $aHenri Pirenne. 610 $aIbn S?n?. 610 $aIran. 610 $aIslam. 610 $aJosef Strzygowski. 610 $aJudaism. 610 $aJustinianic code. 610 $aLatin Europe. 610 $aManicheism. 610 $aMazdaism. 610 $aMediterranean. 610 $aMountain Arena. 610 $aMuhammad. 610 $aNorth America. 610 $aPeter Brown. 610 $aPisa. 610 $aQur'?an. 610 $aRoman law. 610 $aT?s. 610 $aUmayyads. 610 $aarchaeology. 610 $aarchitectural history. 610 $aart. 610 $acommonwealths. 610 $aempires. 610 $aexegesis. 610 $alate Antiquity. 610 $alate antique studies. 610 $amonotheism. 610 $apatristic Christianity. 610 $aphilosophy. 610 $arabbinic Judaism. 610 $asalvation. 610 $atranslation. 615 0$aIslam. 615 0$aReligions. 676 $a297.09 700 $aFowden$b Garth$0442889 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910453290603321 996 $aBefore and after Muhammad$91399387 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01478nam 2200325 n 450 001 996392441403316 005 20200824121709.0 035 $a(CKB)4940000000108871 035 $a(EEBO)2240904113 035 $a(UnM)99864139e 035 $a(UnM)99864139 035 $a(EXLCZ)994940000000108871 100 $a19931008d1648 uh | 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurbn||||a|bb| 200 10$aTwo ordinances of the Lords and Commons assembled in Parliament$b[electronic resource] $eone for the raising six thousand pounds for payment of the foure hundred souldiers, added to the forces already in the Tower of London, the other for the continuance of the committee of the army, and treasurers at wars.
