Today, however, these drugs no longer work against the deadliest form of malaria that exists throughout the world. Malaria deaths in sub-Saharan Africa "currently just over one million per year "are rising because of increased resistance to the old, inexpensive drugs. Although effective new drugs called oeartemisinins are available, they are unaffordable for the majority of the affected population, even at a cost of one dollar per course. Saving Lives, Buying Time: Economics of Malaria Drugs in an Age of Resistance examines the history of malaria treatments, provides an overview of the current drug crisis, and offers recommendations on maximizing access to and effectiveness of antimalarial drugs. The book finds that most people in endemic countries will not have access to currently effective combination treatments, which should include an artemisinin, without financing from the global community. Without funding for effective treatment, malaria mortality could double over the next 10 to 20 years and transmission will intensify. 606 $aAntimalarials$xEconomic aspects 606 $aPharmaceutical policy 606 $aDrug resistance in microorganisms 606 $aMalaria$xdrug therapy 606 $aAntimalarials$xtherapeutic use 606 $aDrug Costs 606 $aDrug Resistance 615 0$aAntimalarials$xEconomic aspects. 615 0$aPharmaceutical policy. 615 0$aDrug resistance in microorganisms. 615 2$aMalaria$xdrug therapy. 615 2$aAntimalarials$xtherapeutic use. 615 2$aDrug Costs. 615 2$aDrug Resistance. 676 $a616.9/362061 701 $aArrow$b Kenneth Joseph$f1921-$044429 701 $aPanosian$b Claire$01803755 701 $aGelband$b Hellen$01808924 712 02$aInstitute of Medicine (U.S.).$bCommittee on the Economics of Antimalarial Drugs. 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910959758103321 996 $aSaving lives, buying time$94360531 997 $aUNINA
