Inspired in part by the kibbutz movement?s recent commemoration of its centennial, this study responds to a significant gap in scholarship. Numerous sociological and economic studies have appeared, but no book-length study has ever addressed the tremendous range of critically imaginative portrayals of the kibbutz. This diachronic study addresses novels, short fiction, memoirs, and cinematic portrayals of the kibbutz by both kibbutz ?insiders? (including those born and raised there, as well as those who joined the kibbutz as immigrants or migrants from the city) and ?outsiders.? For these artists, the kibbutz is a crucial microcosm for understanding Israeli values and identity. The central drama explored in their works is the monumental tension between the individual and the collective, between individual aspiration and ideological rigor, between self-sacrifice and self-fulfillment. Portraying kibbutz life honestly demands retaining at least two oppositional things in mind at once?the absolute necessity of euphoric dreaming and the mellowing inevitability of disillusionment. As such, these artists? imaginative witnessing of the fraught relation between the collective and the citizen-soldier is the story of Israel itself. 606 $aKibbutzim in literature 606 $aKibbutzim$xHistory 606 $aIsraeli literature$xHistory and criticism 606 $aKibbutzim in motion pictures 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aKibbutzim in literature. 615 0$aKibbutzim$xHistory. 615 0$aIsraeli literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aKibbutzim in motion pictures. 676 $a892.409355 700 $aOmer-Sherman$b Ranen$0896799 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910480718503321 996 $aImagining the kibbutz$92466106 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01577nam 2200337Ia 450 001 996385332903316 005 20221102113016.0 035 $a(CKB)4940000000074677 035 $a(EEBO)2240961831 035 $a(OCoLC)12033086 035 $a(EXLCZ)994940000000074677 100 $a19850514d1687 uy | 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurbn||||a|bb| 200 02$aA Few short arguments proving that 'tis every English-man's interest as well as duty at all times to endeavor the absolute and effectual repeal of all the religious penal laws and tests now in force against Catholics and dissenters$b[electronic resource] $eso as they may never more be revived, and the rather because thereby liberty and property may be better secured than at present they are 210 $aLondon $cPrinted by Henry Hills ... and are to be sold at his printing house ...$d1687 215 $a2 p 300 $aCaption title. 300 $aImprint from colophon. 300 $aReproduction of original in the Huntington Library. 330 $aeebo-0113 606 $aDissenters, Religious$xLegal status, laws, etc$zEngland 615 0$aDissenters, Religious$xLegal status, laws, etc. 801 0$bEAE 801 1$bEAE 801 2$bUMI 801 2$bWaOLN 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996385332903316 996 $aA Few short arguments proving that 'tis every English-man's interest as well as duty at all times to endeavor the absolute and effectual repeal of all the religious penal laws and tests now in force against Catholics and dissenters$92320941 997 $aUNISA
