Largely credited with the concept of the 'Third Way', he continues to be a key advisor to Tony Blair, and is generally presented as an exponent of liberalism and socialism. He was the 1999 BBC Reith lecturer and he has been Professor of Sociology at Cambridge University since 1986.This original and controversial book provides an excellent introduction to Giddens' work, covering the wide range of his writing from theory to self-reflexivity, modernity and politics, placing them all within the illuminating framework of a historical context. Steven Loyal argues that Giddens' writing has always embodied a political and ethical position, one that has changed considerably over the years and is best understood through the social context in which it was written. Giddens' work in the 1970's attempted to marry liberalism and socialism, but, following the collapse of Communism in the 1990 East-European revolutions, his worldview became liberal rather than socialist, and his later work on reflexivity and the 'Third Way' embodies this. Loyal explores how this world-view accounts for many tensions and failures in Giddens' theory and that, overall, his work is fundamentally flawed. 606 $aSociology$xPhilosophy 606 $aSocial structure 606 $aCivilization, Modern 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aSociology$xPhilosophy. 615 0$aSocial structure. 615 0$aCivilization, Modern. 676 $a301/.01 700 $aLoyal$b Steven$0476416 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910455609803321 996 $aSociology of Anthony Giddens$9244113 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01870nam 2200505Ia 450 001 996384839403316 005 20200824132140.0 035 $a(CKB)4940000000075341 035 $a(EEBO)2264189942 035 $a(OCoLC)ocm12158630e 035 $a(OCoLC)12158630 035 $a(EXLCZ)994940000000075341 100 $a19850614d1692 uy | 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurbn||||a|bb| 200 12$aA confutation of atheism from the origin and frame of the world$hPart I$b[electronic resource] $ea sermon preached at St. Mary-le-Bow, October the 3d, 1692 : being the sixth of the lecture founded by the Honourable Robert Boyle ... /$fby Richard Bentley .. 210 $aLondon $cPrinted for Henry Mortlock ...$d1692 215 $a[2], 34 p 300 $aReproduction of originals in the British Library and the Huntington Library. 300 $aAppears on reel 13:3 as the sixth title in the author's The folly and unreasonableness of atheism, 1693. 330 $aeebo-0216 606 $aReligion and science$vEarly works to 1800 606 $aNature$xReligious aspects$vEarly works to 1800 606 $aChristianity and atheism$vEarly works to 1800 606 $aAtheism$vControversial literature 606 $aAtheism$vSermons 606 $aAtheism$vEarly works to 1800 606 $aSermons, English$y17th century 615 0$aReligion and science 615 0$aNature$xReligious aspects 615 0$aChristianity and atheism 615 0$aAtheism 615 0$aAtheism 615 0$aAtheism 615 0$aSermons, English 700 $aBentley$b Richard$f1662-1742.$0191206 801 0$bEAA 801 1$bEAA 801 2$bm/c 801 2$bUMI 801 2$bWaOLN 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996384839403316 996 $aA confutation of atheism from the origin and frame of the world$92394823 997 $aUNISA
