L'amore diventa metafora o metonimia della letteratura e viceversa. La tesi è supportata da un'analisi dettagliata dei testi di Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Friedrich Hölderlin, Ugo Foscolo, Madame de Staël e Giacomo Leopardi. Un risultato importante di questo studio comparativo è l'evidenza di una comunanza paneuropea del discorso letterario sull'amore intorno al 1800.
