Where do such visual clichés come from? This study investigates the roots of this imagery in popular visual media ranging from magazines to tourist brochures, from anthropological treatises to advertising trade cards, stereoscopic photographs, picture postcards, magic lantern slide sets and films of early cinema. The book provides an in-depth study of this rich and fascinating corpus of popular visual media that has not been studied before, and the discourses that these images were meant to illustrate. This intermedial approach offers new insights into the emergence of national clichés and the study of stereotypical thinking. 410 0$aFraming film (Amsterdam, Netherlands) 606 $aNational characteristics, Dutch 606 $aCliches in motion pictures 606 $aStereotypes (Social psychology) in motion pictures 606 $aStereotypes (Social psychology) in mass media 606 $aStereotypes (Social psychology)$zNetherlands 607 $aNetherlands$xIn motion pictures 607 $aNetherlands$xIn mass media 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aNational characteristics, Dutch. 615 0$aCliches in motion pictures. 615 0$aStereotypes (Social psychology) in motion pictures. 615 0$aStereotypes (Social psychology) in mass media. 615 0$aStereotypes (Social psychology) 676 $a303.385 700 $aDellmann$b Sarah$0929477 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996379042603316 996 $aImages of Dutchness$92089367 997 $aUNISA
