This is the reality for the Korean comfort girls-women whose lives had been erased since the time of the expansion of comfort stations by the Japanese military in 1937. This book is an effort to bring these women back to life and to make their voices, experiences and memories available to future generations. The experiences of Korean comfort girls-women are a paradigmatic example of how military sexual violence can obliterate the dignity of women and shame them into nonexistence. This book examines how the turning of their innocence into inadequacy, actively by the Japanese government and passively by the Korean government and its people, and also by the world, compounded their long, miserable suffering for half a century until Kim Hak-sun broke the silence in 1991 with the support of Korean activists. The relentless and courageous efforts of Korean comfort girls-women and activists on the road to healing and justice are shared here. These efforts made it possible for us to hear their horrific stories, which are embedded with numerous and intense traumas, allowing them to unfold and be shared on the road to justice and healing. 410 0$aGenocide and Mass Violence in the Age of Extremes 606 $aComfort women$zKorea$xHistory$vAnecdotes 606 $aWorld War, 1939-1945$xWomen$zKorea 606 $aWorld War, 1939-1945$xAtrocities$zAsia 606 $aWorld War, 1939-1945$vPersonal narratives, Korean 606 $aService, Compulsory non-military$zJapan 606 $aAtrocities$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00820727 606 $aComfort women$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00869131 606 $aService, Compulsory non-military$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01113525 606 $aWomen$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01176568 607 $aAsia$2fast 607 $aJapan$2fast 607 $aKorea$2fast 608 $aAnecdotes.$2fast 608 $aHistory.$2fast 608 $aPersonal narratives$vKorean.$2fast 610 $aKorea. 610 $aSuppression. 610 $aTrauma research. 610 $aViolence. 615 0$aComfort women$xHistory 615 0$aWorld War, 1939-1945$xWomen 615 0$aWorld War, 1939-1945$xAtrocities 615 0$aWorld War, 1939-1945 615 0$aService, Compulsory non-military 615 7$aAtrocities. 615 7$aComfort women. 615 7$aService, Compulsory non-military. 615 7$aWomen. 700 $aWomen?s Human Rights Center$4auth$01371794 701 $aSon$b Angella$0861025 702 $aResearch Team of the War$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 702 $aWomen's Human Rights Center$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 712 02$aKorean Council for the Women Drafted$4fnd$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/fnd 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996359642103316 996 $aStories that Make History$93401419 997 $aUNISA
