In a Europe remade by the First World War, his talents led him to different roles-intelligence operative, powerful statesman, underground activist, lifelong conspirator. Henryk Józewski directed Polish intelligence in Ukraine, governed the borderland region of Volhynia in the interwar years, worked in the anti-Nazi and anti-Soviet underground during the Second World War, and conspired against Poland's Stalinists until his arrest in 1953. His personal story, important in its own right, sheds new light on the foundations of Soviet power and on the ideals of those who resisted it. By following the arc of Józewski's life, this book demonstrates that his tolerant policies toward Ukrainians in Volhynia were part of Poland's plans to roll back the communist threat. The book mines archival materials, many available only since the fall of communism, to rescue Józewski, his Polish milieu, and his Ukrainian dream from oblivion. An epilogue connects his legacy to the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the democratic revolution in Ukraine in 2004. 517 3 $aPolish artist's mission to liberate Soviet Ukraine 606 $aAnti-communist movements$zUkraine, Western$xHistory 607 $aPoland$xRelations$zUkraine 607 $aUkraine$xEthnic relations 607 $aUkraine$xHistory$y20th century 607 $aUkraine$xRelations$zPoland 607 $aUkraine, Western$xHistory$xAutonomy and independence movements 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aAnti-communist movements$xHistory. 676 $a947.7/084 700 $aSnyder$b Timothy$0148769 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910463041403321 996 $aSketches from a secret war$9746031 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03208nam 2200625 450 001 9910146398503321 005 20170816134227.0 010 $a1-282-17181-X 010 $a9786612171819 010 $a1-4443-0685-5 010 $a1-4443-0686-3 035 $a(CKB)1000000000748757 035 $a(EBL)437468 035 $a(OCoLC)609839486 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000354139 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11273846 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000354139 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10320229 035 $a(PQKB)11689385 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC437468 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000748757 100 $a20160805h19931993 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 00$aElectronic technologies and instruction $etools, users, and power /$fFrank A.
