In the face of several major earthquakes and floods, riots and economic insecurity, police brutality and mass incarceration, some young black Angelenos turned to holy hip hop--a movement merging Christianity and hip hop culture--to 'save' themselves and the city. Converting street corners to airborne churches and gangsta rap beats into anthems of praise, holy hip hoppers used gospel rap to navigate complicated social and spiritual realities and to transform the Southland's fractured terrains into musical Zions. Armed with beats, rhymes, and Bibles, they journeyed through black Lutheran congregations, prison ministries, African churches, reggae dancehalls, hip hop clubs, Nation of Islam meetings, and Black Lives Matter marches. Zanfagna's fascinating ethnography provides a contemporary and unique view of black LA, offering a much-needed perspective on how music and religion intertwine in people's everyday experiences."--Provided by publisher. 410 0$aMusic of the African diaspora ;$v19. 606 $aRap (Music)$zCalifornia$zLos Angeles$xHistory and criticism 606 $aRap (Music)$xReligious aspects$xChristianity 608 $aElectronic books. 610 $a1990s. 610 $aafrican american culture. 610 $aanthems of praise. 610 $abeats. 610 $abibles. 610 $ablack lives matter. 610 $ablack los angeles. 610 $achristianity. 610 $achurches. 610 $aearthquakes. 610 $aeconomic insecurity. 610 $aenvironmental eruption. 610 $aethnomusicology. 610 $afloods. 610 $agangsta rap. 610 $agospel rap. 610 $ahip hop culture. 610 $ahip hop. 610 $alos angeles. 610 $alutheran. 610 $amusic. 610 $amusical philosophy and social aspects. 610 $arap music. 610 $arhymes. 610 $ariots. 610 $asouthland. 610 $aspiritual realities. 615 0$aRap (Music)$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aRap (Music)$xReligious aspects$xChristianity. 676 $a306.4/842490979494 700 $aZanfagna$b Christina$f1980-$0925015 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996333146903316 996 $aHoly hip hop in the City of Angels$92076150 997 $aUNISA
