Bach was a natural language; he wrote fugues in organ toccatas and voluntaries, in masses and motets, in orchestral and chamber music, and even in his sonatas for violin solo. The more intimate fugues he wrote for keyboard are among the greatest, most influential, and best-loved works in all of Western music. They have long been the foundation of the keyboard repertory, played by beginning students and world-famous virtuosi alike. In a series of elegantly written essays, eminent musicologist Joseph Kerman discusses his favorite Bach keyboard fugues-some of them among the best-known fugues and others much less familiar. Kerman skillfully, at times playfully, reveals the inner workings of these pieces, linking the form of the fugues with their many different characters and expressive qualities, and illuminating what makes them particularly beautiful, powerful, and moving. These witty, insightful pieces, addressed to musical amateurs as well as to specialists and students, are beautifully augmented by performances made specially for this volume: Karen Rosenak, piano, playing two preludes and fugues fromTheWell-Tempered Clavier-C Major, book 1; and B Major, book 2--and Davitt Moroney playing the Fughetta in C Major, BWV 952, on clavichord; the Fugue on ";Jesus Christus unser Heiland,"; BWV 689, on organ; and the Fantasy and Fugue in A Minor, BWV 904, on harpsichord. 410 0$aLuminos (University of California Press) 606 $aFugue 606 $aMUSIC / Genres & Styles / Classical$2bisacsh 606 $aFugue$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00935955 608 $bElectronic books. 610 $a18th century fugues. 610 $a18th century music. 610 $abach. 610 $aclassical music. 610 $aclavichord music. 610 $afugue in c major. 610 $afugue in c minor. 610 $afugues. 610 $aharpsichord music. 610 $ahistory of music. 610 $aintimate fugues. 610 $akeyboard composition. 610 $akeyboard music. 610 $amusic appreciation. 610 $amusic composition. 610 $amusic theory. 610 $amusical analysis. 610 $amusical commentary. 610 $amusical scores. 610 $amusicology. 610 $aorgan music. 610 $aorgan toccatas. 610 $apiano keyboard. 610 $astudies in classical music. 610 $atechnical music analysis. 610 $athe well tempered clavier. 615 0$aFugue. 615 7$aMUSIC / Genres & Styles / Classical. 615 7$aFugue. 676 $a786 686 $aLP 38250$2rvk 700 $aKerman$b Joseph$f1924-2014,$0481940 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 801 2$bUkMaJRU 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996328041503316 996 $aThe Art of Fugue$92155605 997 $aUNISA LEADER 02957nam 2200685Ia 450 001 9910785817303321 005 20230421054228.0 010 $a3-11-088692-8 024 7 $a10.1515/9783110886924 035 $a(CKB)2670000000250981 035 $a(EBL)3041989 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000608851 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11445108 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000608851 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10606201 035 $a(PQKB)10427946 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3041989 035 $a(WaSeSS)Ind00013405 035 $a(DE-B1597)40538 035 $a(OCoLC)979588826 035 $a(DE-B1597)9783110886924 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL3041989 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10597889 035 $a(OCoLC)922944883 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000250981 100 $a19960625d1996 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurnn#---|u||u 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aRinging the changes in Europe$b[electronic resource] $eregulatory competition and the transformation of the state : Britain, France, Germany /$fAdrienne He?ritier, Christoph Knill, Susanne Mingers in collaboration with Rhodes Barrett 210 $aBerlin ;$aNew York $cWalter de Gruyter$d1996 215 $a1 online resource (380 p.) 225 0 $ade Gruyter Studies in Organization ;$v74 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 0 $a3-11-014765-3 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references (p.
