When Nafir Suriyya-"The Clarion of Syria"-was penned between September 1860 and April 1861, its author Butrus al-Bustani, a major figure in the modern Arabic Renaissance, had witnessed his homeland undergo unprecedented violence in what many today consider Lebanon's first civil war. Written during Ottoman and European investigations into the causes and culprits of the atrocities, The Clarion of Syria is both a commentary on the politics of state intervention and social upheaval, and a set of visions for the future of Syrian society in the wake of conflict. This translation makes a key historical document accessible for the first time to an English audience. An introduction by the translators sketches the history that led up to the civil strife in Mt. Lebanon, outlines a brief biography of Butrus al-Bustani, and provides an authoritative overview of the literary style and historiography of Nafir Suriyya. Rereading these pamphlets in the context of today's political violence, in war-torn Syria and elsewhere in the Arab world, helps us gain a critical and historical perspective on sectarianism, foreign invasions, conflict resolution, Western interventionism, and nationalist tropes of reconciliation. 606 $aHISTORY / Middle East / General$2bisacsh 607 $aSyria$xHistory$y19th century 610 $aarab world. 610 $aarabic renaissance. 610 $abrief biography. 610 $abutrus al bustani. 610 $acivil strife. 610 $acivil war. 610 $aconflict resolution. 610 $acritical perspective. 610 $aculprits of atrocities. 610 $aenglish audience. 610 $aeuropean investigations. 610 $aforeign invasions. 610 $ahistorical perspective. 610 $ahistoriography. 610 $ahomeland. 610 $akey historical document. 610 $alebanon. 610 $aliterary style. 610 $amt lebanon. 610 $anafir suriyya. 610 $anationalist tropes of reconciliation. 610 $apolitical violence. 610 $asectarianism. 610 $asyria. 610 $aunprecedented violence. 610 $awar. 610 $awestern interventionism. 615 7$aHISTORY / Middle East / General. 676 $a079.5691 700 $aal-Bustani$b Butrus, $4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0645933 702 $aHanssen$b Jens, $4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aSafieddine$b Hicham, $4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996312640103316 996 $aThe Clarion of Syria$92055518 997 $aUNISA
