Under the Chinese Communist Party, "the intellectual" was first and foremost a widening classification of individuals based on Marxist thought. The party turned revolutionaries and otherwise ordinary people into subjects identified as usable but untrustworthy intellectuals, an identification that profoundly affected patterns of domination, interaction, and rupture within the revolutionary enterprise. Drawing on a wide range of data, Eddy U takes the reader on a journey that examines political discourses, revolutionary strategies, rural activities, urban registrations, workplace arrangements, organized protests, and theater productions. He lays out in colorful detail the formation of new identities, forms of organization, and associations in Chinese society. The outcome is a compelling picture of the mutual constitution of the intellectual and the Chinese socialist revolution, the legacy of which still affects ways of seeing, thinking, acting, and feeling in what is now a globalized China. 606 $aCommunism and intellectuals$zChina$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aSocial stratification$zChina$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aHISTORY / Asia / General$2bisacsh 607 $aChina$xIntellectual life$y1949-1976 610 $aassociations. 610 $achinese communist party. 610 $achinese society. 610 $acompelling. 610 $aformation of new identities. 610 $aforms of organization. 610 $aglobalized china. 610 $aintellectuals and chinese socialist revolution. 610 $amarxist classification of individuals. 610 $aorganized protests. 610 $apolitical discourses. 610 $arevolutionary strategies. 610 $arural activities. 610 $astudy of chinese communism. 610 $atheater productions. 610 $aurban registrations. 610 $aworkplace arrangements. 615 0$aCommunism and intellectuals$xHistory 615 0$aSocial stratification$xHistory 615 7$aHISTORY / Asia / General. 676 $a305.5/5095109045 700 $aU$b Eddy$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$00 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996312640003316 996 $aCreating the Intellectual$92080327 997 $aUNISA
