Diese Lücke schließt das vorliegende Handbuch, das in drei Teile gegliedert ist. In Teil 1 steht die geschichtliche Entwicklung der deutsch-jüdischen Literatur vom 18. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart im Mittelpunkt, ergänzt durch ein vorangestelltes Kapitel zur Situation im Mittelalter und der Frühen Neuzeit. Dabei geht es um prinzipielle Fragen jüdisch-religiöser und jüdisch-kultureller Positionen, soweit sie für die deutsch-jüdische Literatur relevant sind, sowie um die Auseinandersetzung mit antijüdischen resp. antisemitischen Strömungen in der deutschen Gesellschaft und ihren Niederschlag in der deutschen Literatur. Jüdische Tradition und jüdische Existenz bilden die leitenden Gesichtspunkte für die Untersuchung bis in die Gegenwart. Teil 2 nimmt wesentliche Orte und Räume der Herausbildung deutsch-jüdischer Literatur bzw. des Einflusses auf sie in den Blick (Berlin, Wien, Prag, Czernowitz, das jiddischsprachige Osteuropa).
